Europe recently introduced the UK ETA, a new digital travel authorization, with another system, ETIAS, set to launch in the near future—both of which will impact U.S. citizens traveling to certain parts of Europe. Let’s break down the requirements, application process, and the specific regions in Europe where these visas will be required.
Update (March 2025): The European Union has postponed the implementation of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to late 2026, with a transitional grace period extending into 2027.
Please note that other visa requirements, such as the UK's Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), remain unchanged and are still scheduled to take effect in 2025.

UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
The UK ETA is an active, new entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers, including U.S. citizens, visiting the United Kingdom. It is part of the UK’s efforts to enhance border security and streamline entry processes. To see a full list of which countries now require a UK ETA, click here.
Application Process
The application process is straightforward and can be completed online or via the 'UK ETA' app, available on the Google Play and Apple App Stores. Applicants will need their valid passport, an email address, and a payment method for the £10 fee. The application typically takes about 20 minutes, and decisions are usually made within three working days, with many applicants receiving a decision in minutes when applying through the app.
Validity and Usage
Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the traveler's passport and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries into the UK during its validity period. You don’t need a UK ETA for an airside transit if you stay within the airport’s international transit area. However, if you must pass through UK border control, an ETA is required unless you qualify for an exemption. An ETA does not guarantee entry; travelers must still meet the UK's entry requirements upon arrival.
European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
ETIAS is not yet an active program, but it is now set to launch late 2026. It’s important to stay informed and prepared for its implementation, as it will soon be required for travelers to parts of the European Union. These 30 European countries listed below require visa-exempt travelers to have an ETIAS travel authorization.

Application Process
The application will be completed online or through their mobile app, requiring a valid passport, email address, and payment for the €7 fee. Most applications will be processed within minutes, but some may take longer for approval. Keep in mind that processing may take up to 14 extra days if additional information is needed or up to 30 days if an interview is required. To avoid delays, apply for your ETIAS travel authorization well in advance of your trip.
Validity and Usage
Once approved, ETIAS will be electronically linked to the traveler’s passport and remain valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple short-term stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, having an ETIAS does not guarantee entry, as travelers must still meet Schengen border requirements.
Who Needs the ETIAS
Travelers from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, will need an approved ETIAS to enter most European countries in the Schengen Area. Here is the complete list:

While the UK ETA is already in effect for visa-exempt travelers visiting the UK, the ETIAS has yet to be implemented for entry into the Schengen Area. Both systems aim to enhance border security and streamline travel, but they do not guarantee entry, as travelers must still meet immigration requirements. Staying informed about these changes and applying in advance will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.
