Real ID: What It Is, Why You Need It, and How to Get Yours Before You Travel

Writer: Haille WallaceHaille Wallace

We’ve been hearing about the Real ID for years, with its start date pushed back time and time again. But now, the wait is over—Real ID enforcement officially begins on May 7, 2025. So, what does that mean for you? Let’s break it down and make sure you’re prepared for the changes ahead.

What is the Real ID?

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act was created to enhance security by setting stricter federal standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. This law follows a key recommendation from the 9/11 Commission, ensuring IDs meet uniform security measures.

Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers—even those flying domestically—will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another TSA-approved form of identification, such as a passport, to pass through airport security. If your ID doesn’t meet these new federal requirements, you won’t be allowed to board your flight. Avoid travel disruptions—check your ID before your next trip!

How to Identify a Real ID

REAL ID-compliant cards will feature one of several specific markings in the upper portion of the card. If your ID lacks one of these markings, it does not meet REAL ID standards and cannot be used as identification for boarding commercial flights.

Here are some images to help you identify the Real ID markings on your driver's license or identification card. Check for these symbols to ensure your ID is compliant before your next flight!

How to Get Your Real ID

Check your state’s driver’s licensing agency website for a complete list of required documents to obtain a REAL ID. At a minimum, you’ll need to provide proof of:

  • Full legal name

  • Date of birth

  • Social Security Number

  • Two documents verifying your residential address

  • Lawful status in the U.S.

Some states may have additional requirements, so be sure to review the guidelines online before heading to your local licensing office.
